Managing Piping Loads to the Pumps

0 ratings

„Piping loads, forces and moments can have destructive influence if not carefully considered during the piping design and calculations.“

This means that piping design, if not correctly done and pipe stress analysis does not cover the evaluation of forces and moments, can cause damage and destroy the pump.

“Understanding piping loads on pumps is critical for good piping design.”

Pipe stress engineers have to understand the influence of the piping on the pump. Also, have to understand all the measures which help to reduce loads on the pump. The main task of the pipe stress engineer is to check the pipe stresses, but checking the loads is of the same importance, if not higher. Piping systems “can forgive” errors and omissions, but pumps will rarely forgive mistakes.

Do not forget the pump loads evaluation!

You do not want to be responsible for pump failure!

One of the biggest challenges in the engineering practice of engineers who deal with pipe stress and flexibility analysis of the piping systems connected to the pumps is to deal with loads applied to the pump connections (nozzles), suction and discharge.

What are nozzle loads?

Nozzle loads are the net forces and moments applied on pump nozzles from the weight and thermal expansion of connected piping. The loads applied on the pump connections are directly related to how the piping is supported.

API 610 / ISO 13709 / ISO 2858 / ISO 5199 / ISO 9905

The allowable nozzle loads, defined by the pump manufacturer or the codes, shall be compared against the worst load conditions imposed on the nozzle during the upset conditions. Satisfying the manufacturer or code acceptable values of pump loads, the piping engineer ensures that no coupling misalignment is likely to occur due to piping loads. If not correctly done and if general rules are not followed, piping design may result in increased vibrations and failure of the seals and bearings.

The piping system design can have an important influence on the pump operation and pipe life expectancy. Due to this, a careful approach to the design of suction and discharge piping should be taken into consideration in the design of pump piping.

From experience and practice, we know that, in most cases, it is easier to satisfy the requirements placed on the piping from the stress point of view than the requirements set on the load limits on the connecting equipment. This is very important to emphasise because the practice has shown that designers often finish their work by checking the stress in the piping while the load check is omitted, whether it is a mistake or the designer did not have defined limitations regarding the forces and moments on the equipment.

Do not stop after the stress check!

Carefully evaluate pump loads!

You should avoid the following:

  • Damage to the pump and, consequently, the costs of repairs.
  • Losses due to the plant not working.
  • Bad reputation.

NUMIKON can help you better understand potential issues and how to avoid your piping design jeopardising pump operation. Our experience and successfully finished projects in the last +15 years guarantee this.

Problems which we can help you to solve:

  • If you cannot satisfy load limitations and you cannot finish your project,
  • Load cases when more pumps are involved (with different operating combinations),
  • A challenge when expansion joints are involved,
  • Challenges when seismic loads must be considered,
  • etc.

Throughout two Webinars and the delivery of one eBook, I will present you with most of the important things which you have to know if you deal with piping connected to the pumps.

Why am I doing this?

During my +20 years of experience with all aspects of piping design and calculations, I gathered a lot of experience and knowledge collected through working on various projects and learning from older colleagues, and it is time that I share my knowledge and experience.

Who is this intended for?

  • Pipe Stress Engineers
  • Piping Designers
  • Piping Lead Engineers
  • Piping Managers

What you will learn during our training webinars:

  • What is important when you deal with pump piping systems?
